Potentials of Micro Textured Cutting Tools in Machining of Aero Engine Alloys

© Fraunhofer IPT

To what extend can tool life be increased by surface texturing of cutting tools for milling of aero engine alloys?

Challenge and Motivation

  • Extensive tool wear in machining of new and advanced alloys leads to high tool costs.
  • Micro texturing of rake and flank face offers the potential to increase the tool life, but only very few results are available for machining Ni-based alloys.

Objective

  • Application of micro structures on cutting tools with ultra-short pulse laser.
  • Identification of textures that lead to a reduction of cutting forces and tool wear in milling.
