How sensitive is the direct measurement of flank wear to tool orientation and angular position deviations?

Challenge and Motivation

• According to ICTM Project 2.5 in 2022, accuracy of direct tool wear assessment is still challenged by the microscopy process. Current norms allow excessive freedom on, e.g., tool orientations, angular positions, light, and magnification.
• An efficient and standardized method could largely reduce uncertainty in the direct method.

Objective

• Standardize and automate flank wear measurement.
