How to design machining processes for impellers with barrel tools to ensure stability and quality?

Challenge and Motivation

  • Due to the larger radius, barrel tools can realize higher width of cut by at the same time, achieving surface roughness values like ball end mills.
  • More engagement leads to higher deflection and different excitation with barrel tools.

Objective

  • Development of simulation-based optimized process design for impellers to ensure machining stability and product quality.
  • Experimental and simulation-based comparison of impeller machining with barrel tools.
