Alternative Machining Processes for Disk Roughing

© WZL der RWTH Aachen

Which machining strategy is the most suitable for roughing profiled grooves in turbine disks?

Challenge and Motivation

  • Broaching with high speed steel is still state of the art for roughing and finishing of fir-trees and dovetails into turbine disks.
  • Disadvantages of the broaching process are high tool costs, special machine tools and inflexible slot geometries.

Objective

  • Identification of alternative processes for roughing of profiled grooves.
  • Technical and economic evaluation of the strategies.
