How to design a high-productive milling process using barrel tools ensuring stable cutting?

Challenge and Motivation

  • Due to the larger radius, barrel tools can realize higher width of cut by in the same time, achieving surface roughness values like ball end mills.
  • But, the excitation during machining depends on the cutting force and therefore on the CWE1 which is significantly different for barrel tools and ball end mills.

Objective

  • Development of a methodology capable to evaluate stability of barrel tools considering simulated CWE.
  • Experimental and simulation-based comparison of barrel tool and ball end mill regarding stability.
