How is the resulting part quality of barrel tool milling compared to ball end milling?

Challenge and Motivation

• In previous ICTM Collaborative R&D projects Fraunhofer IPT demonstrated the rough and finish machining of a Blisk geometry with barrel tools. 
• The established best-practice machining process ultimately enables a systematic assessment of the achievable part quality.
  

Objective

• Benchmark of the achieved part quality in Blisk manufacturing (barrel tool vs. ball end mill). 
• Model-based evaluation of the achieved part quality and assessment of root causes for quality issues.
