ICTM Collaborative R&D 2022

Further Analysis of Advanced Cutting Tool Materials BL-PCBN & SiAlON Ceram

How to increase the process reliability for the advanced cutting tool materials?

Challenge and Motivation

  • Advanced cutting tool materials allow a significant increase in productivity when machining components made from nickel-based alloys.
  • Results from ICTM R&D Project 2.6 in 2020 confirm this productivity increase (approx. - 50 % machining time) but also reveal some challenges in the process-safe implementation of BL-PCBN and SiAlON ceramic milling processes on complex demonstrator blisk geometry.

Objective

  • Increase of process reliability for advanced roughing (SiAlON ceramics) and finishing (BL-PCBN) of thin-walled components made from Inconel 718 considering the previous research results from past ICTM R&D projects.
