Overview about Pre-heating Concepts for LPBF

What are suitable pre-heating concepts for L-PBF and what are their potentials?

 

Challenge and Motivation

  • Pre-heating of LPBF parts reduces distortion and enables manufacturing of materials susceptible to cracks (γ-TiAl, MAR-M 247, …).
  • State-of-the-art concepts lead to decreased build area temperature with increased built-height.

Objective

  • Using pre-heating in LPBF has potential to decrease part deformation and extend processible material range.
  • Temperature in the build area has to be constant during process.
