Is it possible to avoid cracks in L-PBF components by using modulated laser radiation?

 

Challenge and Motivation

  • High performance superalloys tend to crack during processing by means of LPBF.
  • In particular, components made of superalloys benefit from the geometric freedom of LPBF.

Objective

  • Avoid cracks during processing of a superalloy using LPBF and modulated laser radiation.
  • Demonstrate the feasibility for a selected complex application-relevant component.
